Asgeir Bjarnason, a biomedical engineer with the Research and development Department at Star Oddi in Iceland was exhibiting at Aquaculture America 2022 in San Diego, California for the first time. He was on the exhibition to promote his company"s new implant for fish, that once inserted would gather information about the physical well-being of the animal during its growth period. The implant is placed near the heat to pick up and record vital signs of the fish. At present the probe has to be remove physically in order to read its data, however the company is working to develop a transmitter to pass the information gathered to a remote device. Mr Bjarnason believes there is great opportunity for this and similar devices not just in research work but also in managing fish stocks. Roger Gilbert of International Aquafeed magazine interviewed him at his booth.
